The spokesperson of the newly elected coalition government Hon Halifa Sallah have defended the appointment of Madam Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang as the country’s new vice president in a press conference held in Banjul today. According to the 1997 constitution of the The Gambia sections 62/1 and 70/2 establish of age limit of 65 years.

The first to be announced in president elect Adama Barrow’s cabinet was Madam Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang who is 68 years old and many Gambian’s raised concern on social media about the appointment of the former Gambian diplomat.

Mr Sallah did not response to the questions from the press directly but reassured that the president elect and his team will work on reforming the constitution which he describe was enacted to favor the former president. The coalition is aware of the concerns raised by Gambians and I can tell you that the transition government political appointees would be from the eight parties that came together to form a coalition base on their professional capacities and that process is already done Sallah added.

When push on the matter of the appointment of the VP again and again by the journalists, Sallah argued that the reasons why President Barrow appointed Madam Tambajang is because she is vastly experience as a former state diplomat and academically qualify thus will be helpful within the three year transition period stressing that the constitution need to be look into again as most of it was there to favor Jammeh stay in power.

Mr Sallah uses the opportunity to inform the public that the twitter account with the name @barrowOfficial1 is the correct account for the president of the republic.
