A French student of 23 years, Iris Mittenaere, was awarded the title of Miss Universe in the final night of the annual contest held in the Philippines.

Mittenaere, Lille, wore the crown after beating the other two finalists: Miss Haiti, which is the 25 year-old Raquel Pelissier, and 23 year-old Miss Colombia, Andrea Tovar.

Mittenaere, who is studying dentistry, said during a news conference in Manila that “France and Europe are really in need of a Miss Universe.”

It is the second time that France has won this title in over 60 years.
